The Aliso Viejo Ice Palace in Orange County offers public skating and ice skating birthday parties. We went to one for six year olds. They have a seperate room where you can have your own private party. The current price of $175 for 10 kids and 2 adults for 1 hour is about average.
Here is the current package:

I highly recommend adding the group lesson since most kids haven't skated before. Most importantly, the kids get to skate for free which is normaill $10 for admission and $3 for rental.
One thing to keep in mind, it is cold in here, so dress apropriately. At the birthday party we went to the 'goodie' was a matching gloves and tossel cap. Very cute and appropriate idea!
I wouldn't really recommend it for first graders though. Most kids have not been ice skating or even roller skating at this age and it takes more than one 15 minute session to 'stand up' on the skates for many. I would think it is a better idea for 3rd grade and older kids. The rink is open to the public so you have tons of skaters going around the rink. If your child is invited to an ice skating party, I would plan on one parent skating too unless you know your child is strong and athletic enough to handle it alone
for the first time. Personally I wouldn't let my child go it alone until I knew she was confident on her skates.
We will be checking out the lessons though later this year. While my daughter could barely stand up on the skates, she wanted desperately to skate and did not want to leave. (Athleticism isn't her strong point). We will definitely go back for the lessons!
However, I am thinking of introducing her to rollerskating first. We will keep you posted.
